Your fifth grade child has arrived at the mid-point between childhood and adolescence, a developmental time that brings great advancements both socially and emotionally. The students become steadier and more self-confident as they are comfortable with themselves and how they relate to the world. This maturity allows for the ability to work independently and to understand new perspectives, providing a significant opportunity for learning. 

Our curriculum helps the students to move beyond themselves and out into the world in both time and space. Formal studies of history, geography, geometry, and botany challenge the students to think holistically. A signature of the 5th grade is the Pentathalon event, where students from multiple Waldorf schools gather together to compete for laurel crowns in a contest inspired by the Ancient Greeks. The ideals of truth and beauty permeate the games.

Because the children are developing a stronger sense of their own personality, every opportunity is taken to teach them to respect others. Students are helped to differentiate clearly and accurately between the opinions and experiences of their own and of others.  

Mathematics:  Calculations with fractions and decimals, Geometry

Language Arts: Composition, grammar, active and passive voice, vocabulary development, dictation, journaling, independent reading and writing

Literature:  Myths, tales, and literature of the ancient cultures of India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece

Science:  Botany and geography

History:  Ancient cultures of India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece

Spanish:  Formal grammar, regular verbs and possessive adjectives, individualized dialogue and expanded vocabulary, pronouns, reading and spelling practice, poems and songs

Physical Education:  Pentathlon training includes long jump, javelin throwing, discus, running and wrestling

Handwork:  Knitting slippers, scarves and mittens

Woodwork:  Wooden tops, birdhouses and simple toys

Art:  Drawing, painting and clay modeling

Theater:  Class play complementing fifth grade curriculum

Music:  Flute, chorus, string ensemble, community-wide concerts

Field trips, including the Pentathlon overnight trip, are used to enrich the classroom learning. Prior Waldorf experience is not needed to attend fifth grade. Classes are filled on a first come/first serve basis.

Schedule: (M, T, W, F) 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m & (Thursdays) 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
