At Prairie Hill Waldorf School, we believe that education extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom. It’s an immersive, real-world experience, and that’s why we were so excited to welcome our friends from the Lake Country Fire & Rescue for a special visit. It’s an annual tradition that our students look forward to all year, and this time was no exception!
The firefighters arrived with their big, bright red truck, a sight that immediately captivated our young students. They didn’t just talk about their jobs; they gave our children a chance to get up close—really up close—to the tools and equipment they use to keep our community safe. Our students watched in awe as the firefighters demonstrated their powerful “jaws of life” and explained the purpose of every hose, gadget, and compartment on the truck. They even got to try on some of the heavy gear, feeling just a little bit like real-life superheroes.
The kids were full of thoughtful questions, and the firefighters were so patient and kind, answering each one with a smile. This visit was a hands-on lesson in fire safety and the importance of community service. It’s a powerful way for our students to connect with the brave people who serve our area and to understand the critical nature of their work.
This experience is a perfect example of our experiential learning approach, where we balance academic understanding with real-world application. By building relationships with our local community helpers, our children not only learn valuable safety lessons but also develop a deeper appreciation for the people and systems that keep our world running smoothly. It helps them feel secure and gives them a sense of belonging within a larger community.
We are so grateful to the Lake Country Fire & Rescue team for taking the time to share their knowledge and passion with us. Their dedication is an inspiration, and we can’t wait to see them again next year!
