As the calendar turns and we welcome the quiet, snowy beginnings of 2026, we find ourselves looking back with warmth at the vibrant community moments that closed out our previous year.
One of the most cherished highlights of our December was the annual Wreath Making Workshop. While our students are often the ones deep in the “doing”—knitting, woodworking, or gardening—this event was a special opportunity for the adults in our community to step into the role of the student, pick up the shears, and engage their own “hands” in a meaningful way.
Embracing the Challenge
The workshop was more than just a craft session; it was a testament to the Waldorf value of experiential learning.
Participants were greeted with the scent of fresh pine, cedar, and fir. The task at hand—transforming a wire frame and loose boughs into a balanced, sturdy, and beautiful wreath—is harder than it looks! From mastering the tension of the florist wire to selecting the perfect dried orange slices and pinecones for decoration, every participant rose to the challenge.
As we often remind our students at Prairie Hill, “You can do hard things.” There is a unique kind of joy that comes from tackling a new skill as an adult. It requires a certain vulnerability to be a beginner again, but the reward is a deep sense of accomplishment and a tangible reminder of one’s own creative capacity.
Community in Every Bough
In a world that often feels fast-paced and digital, gathering in our gym to work with natural materials is a grounding experience. We saw seasoned parents helping newcomers, laughter shared over stubborn branches, and a beautiful variety of “unique gifts” reflected in the finished wreaths. No two were alike, yet each was a masterpiece of effort and intention.
These winter traditions are the threads that weave our community closer together. They remind us that the education we provide here isn’t just for the children—it’s a lifelong journey of discovery for all of us.
Looking Ahead to 2026
We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and shared their light during the holiday season. We are looking forward to a year filled with more growth, more “hard things” mastered, and more moments of connection on our beautiful 14-acre campus.
Mark Your Calendars! Because this workshop is a perennial favorite, we’ve already set the date for next year. Please join us on December 12th, 2026, for another afternoon of creativity and community.
Wishing you all a peaceful and purposeful New Year!
